Why are we called “The Way?”
This name has a double meaning. Firstly, it is an ancient description of our faith. In Exodus 32:8 God makes it clear He has given us “The Way” to live. The unfortunate story of humanity is shown in Leviticus 18:3, we often forsake God’s way and adopt “The Way” of other gods. Throughout the Old Testament a major tension is whether to follow God’s Way or other ways. Ultimately, Jesus comes to Earth and proclaims He is “The Way” (John 14:6). To follow Jesus is to follow God’s Way which is The Way. In Acts, we actually called followers of “The Way” not Christians. (Acts 9:2, 24:14) We are excited to continue this ancient language of following “The Way”. Secondly, we desire to connect our students more into Wilshire Ave Church. “The Way” is also an acronym for Wilshire Avenue Youth. Instead of our own name we wanted to remind our students we are part of Wilshire Avenue Church.
