Life Group Questions
Opening Question:

Who is someone that always seems to encourage you when you are around them?

Digging Deeper:

1. Read James 3:1-12. What stands out to you in these verses? What are the different images James uses to help explain the power of the tongue?

2. Look at verses 7-8. Should we even bother to try to tame our tongues? Why is the tongue so hard to tame? Explain.

3. Look at verses 9-10. What do you think James means when he instructs us to not “curse human beings”?

Life Application

1. “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” True or false? What are some ways you have been hurt by words? How have you hurt others with your words?

2. Why are the words we use so important?

3. James 3:9 reminds that people are made in the image of God. What should this mean for how we treat others (this includes how we speak to them)?

4. What are some practical steps you might take to help control your “tongue” in a godly way?

5. How can you use your words for good this week to help encourage and build others up?
