“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3 (NAS)
Sounds too easy, doesn’t it? Just ask God to tell us what we should do and expect Him to be true to His word. Well I really think that it is supposed to be that simple, but we have a hard time believing it and so we complicate things with all kinds of creative excuses for not believing what God has promised to do for us.
Since COVID-19 came along placing Sandy and I in quarantine along with everyone else, we have had lots of time to think about those things that are most important to us, like our relationship with God, our family and friends, and especially those that still don’t know Jesus. We have always prayed for them, but unfortunately, as time goes by we tend to lose our focus if we don’t see immediate answers to what we are praying for.
But the Lord has been dealing with us about our lack of perseverance in prayer, so when God told us to go out every morning and walk in front of the seven condos in our gated complex and pray specifically for the salvation of each family, we obeyed. Two months later, one of the unsaved neighbors drove into their driveway as we were walking by and waved us over as she was getting out of her car. She reminded us that last year we had offered to help her learn more about the Bible and that she was interested in meeting with us. Of course, we said, “Yes,” and agreed that we would choose a good time for us all. The next day Sandy gave her a copy of Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life, and four days later we had our first time together with her and her husband to talk about what they are learning about God and His plan for their lives.
What if we hadn’t obeyed and started praying more intentionally for our condominium complex? Was it just a coincidence that our neighbor responded at that moment to our having reached out to her a year before? Ask the Lord, wait for His direction and obey. Maybe being a follower of Jesus really is that simple.
